Inspections of Public Resources
DOH-Sarasota inspects the following public
resources:
- Healthy Beaches Program (Beach water quality
inspections)
County health departments work with local governments and other
partners to find solutions to the water quality difficulties at our
public beaches. The public is promptly notified when an advisory or
warning is in effect.
- Public drinking water systems
Trained specialists oversee the construction and operation of all
public water systems that provide piped water to 15 or more service
connections, or serve 25 or more people for 60 days or more per year
to assure safe drinking water.

- Child care facilities
Trained specialists conduct routine inspections twice a
year at licensed child care centers through an interagency agreement
with the Department of Children and Families. An environmental
health inspection ensures good sanitary health and safety practices
are in place.
- Food establishments
DOH-Sarasota does NOT inspect restaurants. Restaurants are
inspected by the
Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations.
Certain non-restaurant food establishments are monitored
by DOH-Sarasota to ensure safety and sanitary conditions. Establishments
regulated include: bars and lounges; child care facilities; civic,
fraternal, and religious organizations; detention facilities; schools
and institutions. Safe food, safe food preparation, and food handling
consultation are provided.
- Group care facilities
Inspections are completed regularly
by DOH-Sarasota for group care facilities, such as adult family care homes,
assisted living facilities, child care facilities, crisis stabilization
units, developmentally disabled residences, hospice residences,
residential drug treatment centers, and transitional living facilities.
- Medical Quality Assurance
(MQA Program)
The Medical Quality Assurance (MQA) program is responsible for
safety and sanitation inspections in massage facilities, dental
labs, optical facilities, and electrolysis establishments. In
addition to licensing all establishments, MQA also confirms
liability insurance for massage facilities which protects both staff
and clients.
- Mobile Home & Recreational Vehicle Parks
Trained specialists monitor parks and camps to assure safe drinking
water, proper sewage disposal, and adequate sanitary facilities and
conditions.
- Public pools & spas
Environmental Health Services regulates the
construction, modification, and maintenance of all commercial bathing
places in Sarasota County. This includes pools, spas, wading pools, and
interactive water features at parks, schools, health clubs, and any
facility consisting of five or more living units. Inspections are
conducted twice a year and water samples for bacterial analysis are
collected four times a year.
Environmental Health Services also
offers a pool operator's certification course four times a year, which
covers basic information on pool chemistry, filtration, code
requirements, water born diseases, and algae control. All commercial
pool service personnel or a representative of the bathing place must be
certified in Sarasota County. Call (941) 861-6675 for more
information.
- Tanning Salons
These facilities are regulated under Chapter 64E-17, Florida
Administrative Code. All tanning equipment (beds and booths) are
inspected twice a year. Tanning salon operators must successfully
complete a State of Florida approved certification course before
applying for an annual license.
