DOH-Sarasota offers comprehensive School Health services to all students
enrolled in public and charter schools. School Health also ensures
private school students meet state-mandated requirements for
immunizations, physical examinations, and scoliosis screening.
School Health Staff
- Registered Nurses (RNs) [+]
Each registered nurse is assigned to one or more public and charter
schools in Sarasota County. The primary responsibilities of
the nurse are to oversee each school’s health program and medication
administration procedures and to work with parents and teachers of
children with special medical needs. RNs also educate students
and school staff about living a healthy lifestyle. The nurse
follows up on deviations in screening results or student health
records. Registered nurses are available to private schools
for health education lessons, student health consultations, and to
train health room staff. School Health nurses are available
upon request from the school to screen 7th grade private school
students for scoliosis. Staff training and use of equipment for
vision and hearing screenings are also available.
- Clerical Staff [+]
School Health clerical staff members assist the nurses with
state-mandated growth and development screenings, review student
health data to ensure compliance with Florida statutes, and provide
training on computerized health systems to health room staff.
